What Does It Really Mean to Renew Your Mind? A Biblical Look at Mindset Coaching

Written by MaryBeth Wimmer | Jun 16, 2025 11:48:17 PM

When I am asked this question, “Is it biblical to focus on mindset coaching?”, my thoughts invariably go to Colossians 3:2.

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

“If the battlefield is in your mind, why are you still fighting with plastic swords?”

For years, I thought mindset work was for secular self-help. That was until I realized Scripture talks about mindset constantly, just not with trendy hashtags. Words like renewed, double-minded, carnal, sound, and sober all describe mental states God wants to shift in us.

Your mind is a field of battle.  It is a place where enemies are conquered, fears are banished, and enemy combatants are captured.   As you win one victory, the enemy tries to flank your maneuvers.  You must constantly renew your battle plan.

Romans 12:2:

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

This is not motivational fluff—it’s a command for Kingdom living.

Why Your Mindset Matters to God

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh... but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” — Romans 8:5–6 (KJV)

God isn’t just after your behavior; He’s after your beliefs. Why? Because your beliefs drive your decisions.

And your mindset isn’t just shaped by what you read or hear—it’s shaped by what you dwell on.

In heaven, there is no more curse (Revelation 22:3). So when you set your mind on “things above,” you are being blessing-minded, peace-minded, and joy-minded.

5 Toxic Mindsets Found in Scripture

Let’s start by identifying the mindsets that steal truth, kill our God consciousness and destroy our trust in a loving God.

1. The Carnal Mind

Romans 8:7 – “The carnal mind is enmity against God...”
This is the flesh-led mind that resists spiritual truth. It is emotionally reactive, fear-driven, and quick to gratify the ego and body.

✅ Renewal Strategy: Replace carnal logic with spiritual discernment. Read the Word before reacting. Pause before posting.

2.  The Blind Mind

2 Corinthians 4:4 (AMP) – “The god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers…”
Even believers can walk blinded to truth. Pride, trauma, and cultural lies keep us from seeing clearly.

✅ Renewal Strategy: Ask the Holy Spirit daily to illuminate truth. Say: “Lord, open the eyes of my understanding” (Eph. 1:18).

3. The Corrupt Mind

1 Timothy 6:5 (NLT) – “These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt…”
This mind justifies manipulation, control, or greed. It can look spiritual on the surface, but is full of selfish ambition underneath.

✅ Renewal Strategy: Examine your motives. Journal your desires before big decisions. Let the Word be your filter.  The Word divides between the thoughts and intents of your heart for you.

4. The Hardened Mind

2 Corinthians 3:14 (NLT) – “But the people’s minds were hardened…”
This mind resists change. It becomes calloused from disappointment, offense, or fear.

✅ Renewal Strategy: Confess honestly. Say, “Lord, soften my heart and renew my trust.  Create in me a clean heart, a heart of flesh, not of stone.”

5. The Double Mind

James 1:8 (KJV) – “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
This mind flip-flops between truth and fear, hope and worry. It prays but also panics.

✅ Renewal Strategy: Declare truth out loud daily. Write down your prayers—and your answers. When your mind tries to shift out of faith, arrest it with God’s word.

5 Renewed Mindsets You’re Called to Develop

Let’s build up strongholds of defense against the enemy’s tactics in your thought life.

1. A Willing Mind

2 Corinthians 8:12 – “If there is first a willing mind, it is accepted…”
This is the mind that says, “Yes, Lord,” before knowing the how. It's a trusting posture.

🧠 Fortress: Trust in God over understanding.

2. A Sober Mind

Titus 2:2 – “Teach the older men to be sober-minded…”
This mind is calm, clear, and free from impulsive emotion. It knows when to speak and when to rest.

🧠 Fortress: Godly Wisdom over reaction.

3. A Renewed Mind

Romans 12:2 – “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
This is the mindset of ongoing change. It accepts that healing happens in layers and truth comes in waves.

🧠 Fortress: Humility, acknowledging that it doesn’t hurt to go over the basics again before moving on.

4. A Sound Mind

2 Timothy 1:7 – “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power… and a sound mind.”
This mind resists fear, panic, and obsessive thoughts. It is anchored in identity.

🧠 Fortress: Authority-minded, understanding that God has given us all we need to live victoriously.

5. A Spiritually Minded Mind

Romans 8:6 – “To be spiritually minded is life and peace.”
This mind filters decisions through eternity. It craves what pleases God, not just what comforts us.

🧠 Fortress: Purpose and calling are prioritized over what others think or say.

Final Reflection:

You are not at the mercy of your thoughts.
You’ve been given authority over them.

Take every thought captive.
And remember—He who began a good work in you will finish it.
