Why We Try to Do Everything Ourselves (and Why We Should Stop)
Let Go of Overwhelm & Embrace Biblical Delegation
What are some practical steps I can take to stop feeling overwhelmed and controlling every little detail?
Many high-achieving women—whether in leadership, business, or family life—feel the constant pressure to do it all and control every detail to ensure things run smoothly. But God never intended for us to carry the weight of the world alone.
📖 In John 17:4, Jesus said:
"I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do."
Notice that Jesus didn’t say He did everything. He accomplished what was assigned to Him—not every possible task, but the purpose God set before Him.
Why We Try to Do Everything Ourselves (and Why We Should Stop)
1️⃣ We strive for perfection (but perfection doesn’t exist).
- Truth: Only God is perfect. Ecclesiastes 7:20 says, "Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins."
- When we chase perfection, we chase something unattainable and set ourselves up for constant disappointment and exhaustion.
2️⃣ We don’t want mistakes (but mistakes help others grow).
- Truth: Growth requires learning from mistakes. Proverbs 24:16 says, "Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again."
- If we never allow others to try (and fail), we rob them of growth opportunities and burden ourselves with every responsibility.
3️⃣ It’s faster and easier to do it ourselves (but it keeps us stuck).
- Truth: Short-term ease leads to long-term exhaustion.
- Delegation may take extra effort at first, but it frees us to focus on what truly matters in the long run (Exodus 18:17-18).
4️⃣ We believe asking for help is weakness (but it’s actually wisdom).
- Truth: Even Jesus asked for help. He sent disciples ahead of Him (Luke 10:1), and He needed Simon of Cyrene to carry His cross (Luke 23:26).
- Strong leaders empower others instead of burning themselves out.
5️⃣ We think our worth is tied to how much we do (but God values who we are, not just what we do).
- Truth: God loves us for who we are in Him, not because of our productivity. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
- If our identity is based on how much we accomplish, we’ll always feel like we’re never enough.
6️⃣ We fear letting go of control (but control is an illusion).
- Truth: We never had control to begin with—God does. Proverbs 19:21 says, "Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails."
- Trying to control everything only leads to anxiety and frustration.
7️⃣ We don’t trust others to do it “right” (but different doesn’t mean wrong).
- Truth: Other people bring different strengths.
- Just because someone does it differently doesn’t mean it won’t get done well. 1 Corinthians 12:12-26 reminds us that the Body of Christ works together, not alone.
8️⃣ We think we’re being responsible (but we’re actually limiting what God can do).
- Truth: Overworking ourselves isn’t faithfulness—it’s fear in disguise.
- When we delegate and trust God, He multiplies what we release (Matthew 25:14-30).
9️⃣ We feel guilty if we don’t do it all (but God calls us to rest).
- Truth: Rest is a command, not a suggestion.
- Jesus took time away to rest (Mark 6:31), and we are called to do the same without guilt.
🌱 How to Let Go & Trust God More
✔ Pray before saying yes – Ask, “Is this truly mine to carry?”
✔ Start small – Choose one task to delegate this week.
✔ Embrace grace over perfection – Things don’t have to be your way to be God’s way.
✔ Trust God’s plan – Surrender control and believe He is working behind the scenes.
The Biblical Model of Delegation
✅ Moses Delegated to Wise Leaders (Exodus 18:13-26)
Moses was completely overwhelmed trying to handle every dispute among the Israelites. His father-in-law, Jethro, saw his struggle and gave him wise advice: delegate to capable leaders who could handle smaller cases, freeing Moses to focus on the most important matters.
✅ Jesus Delegated Responsibilities (Matthew 10:1, John 17:4)
Jesus didn’t do everything Himself. He sent the disciples out to heal, teach, and cast out demons. He trusted Peter and Judas to handle financial matters. Jesus focused on His mission while empowering others to help carry the work forward.
✅ The Proverbs 31 Woman Delegated (Proverbs 31:10-31)
This woman of noble character wasn’t personally cooking, sewing, trading, and managing real estate all by herself—she had servants and delegated tasks so she could focus on big-picture decisions that would bless her family and community.
Practical Steps to Let Go of Overwhelm
1️⃣ Recognize Your Priorities – Ask yourself, What has God actually called me to do? Not every task is yours to carry. Colossians 4:5 reminds us to “Walk in wisdom… making the best use of the time.”
2️⃣ Pray Before Saying Yes – Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Before taking on more, seek God’s wisdom (Ephesians 5:16).
3️⃣ Start Small with Delegation – Identify one task you can delegate this week. Maybe it’s household chores, business admin work, or asking for help in ministry.
4️⃣ Trust Others & Release Control – Delegation isn’t just about handing off work; it’s about trusting God to empower others to help carry the load (Numbers 11:14-17).
5️⃣ Accept Imperfection – Things might not be done exactly your way, but done is better than perfect. In 1 Corinthians 12:14-26, Paul reminds us that the Body of Christ needs many members—not just one person doing it all.
The Freedom in Letting Go
Delegating doesn’t mean failing—it means stepping into godly wisdom. If Moses, Jesus, and the Proverbs 31 woman trusted others to help, so can you.
